To prepare for a deep tissue massage, hydrate for 24 hours prior, eat a light meal one to two hours before, take a warm shower to loosen muscles, and arrive 10 to 15 minutes early in loose, comfortable clothing. Plan to drink water in the hours after the session as well.
Hydrate for 24 hours before
Muscle tissue holds water, and well-hydrated tissue is more responsive to deep work. The day before your appointment, drink the equivalent of 8 to 10 glasses of water. Add another full glass within the hour before your session, and continue drinking water in the hours after.
What to do in the hour before your session
- Eat lightly: Have a modest meal one to two hours before. A heavy meal makes lying face down uncomfortable and competes with relaxation.
- Take a warm shower: A warm shower loosens muscles and warms the tissue, making the work more productive from the first stroke.
- Wear comfortable clothing: You undress to your comfort level for the session. Choose something easy to take off and put back on.
- Skip alcohol and intense workouts: Both compromise hydration and put the body in a state where deep work is less effective.
- Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early: Use the time to settle, fill out any needed forms, and discuss your focus areas with Anna.
Communicate during the session
Deep tissue work should reach the edge of productive ache without crossing into pain you must brace against. If pressure is too much, say so. Anna will adjust immediately. Bracing through pain produces no lasting change.
Make a list of focus areas before you arrive. Specific notes (“upper traps and right SI joint”) are more useful than vague ones (“my back”).
What to do after
Drink another two to three glasses of water in the hours after. A little soreness the next day is normal, especially if a chronic area was worked through. The soreness usually feels like the day after a hard workout, not like injury pain. Avoid intense exercise for 24 hours so the body can integrate the work.
